Sunset Beach

Feb 10, 2023 - My new watercolor print "Sunset Beah" is now available. I painted this after a trip to the North Shore, Oahu, Hawaii.  It's a beautiful beach to watch the sunset and it's also one of the top surfing spots in the world. Prints are available on my website here.

Viejo San Juan

Feb 1, 2023 - One of my favorite watercolors, Viejo San Juan was accepted into the Maryland Federation of Art's Street Scenes 2023. It is one of 43 out of 394 entries. I painted it to show the vibrant intensity of colors as well as the sense of depth and distance along this beautiful street in Old San Juan. I was also fascinated with all the electric and phone lines going from house to house which I felt pulled everything together.

2020 Delaplaine National Juried Exhibition

May 22, 2020 - My Nishikigoi 錦鯉 in a Pond watercolor was accepted in the Delaplaine 2020 National Juried Exhibition in Frederick, MD. How did this painting evolve? Well, it all came about after I visited the Ladew Topiary Gardens just outside of Baltimore, MD. They had a beautiful Koi pond! I had my camera and took a bunch of photos. After looking them over, I knew they would turn into a painting. The contrasting colors of the black inky water and bright jewel hues of the koi were mesmerizing! Sketching it was easy. Where I struggled though, was with the background color of the water. I tore it up twice before I was finally able to settle on a good mix. I painted it in several layers. Ivory black and Payne’s Gray, with swaths of Hooker Green and Cobalt Blue. The bubbles are mainly Chinese White with some Windsor Green mixed in. I applied them when the background was dry. A little round white brush stroke and then a dab in the middle with a wet q-tip. I was very happy with the Koi. They turned out well and with very few fixes. See here for more info on the show:

“BLACK & WHITE” The Motif Collective - 2020 International Photography Competition

Apr 1, 2020 - Black and Whites are at the core of this theme, especially since it's the original format of photography and it requires us to look at line, shadow, and contrast in such a different way when shooting. I didn’t place in the top three but my photo “Into the City” was in the top tier shortlist. The photo is of the 7280 arriving at the 40th Street\Lowery Street Subway Station platform, Queens, NYC. The lines and boundaries in this photo pull me right into the city and to the Empire State Building.

"MINIMALISM " The Motif Collective - 2018 International Photography Competition

Oct 1, 2018 - Minimalism or the absence of distractions from shadows, light and often a single subject, line or emotion is also the core of every photograph we take where instead of being subtle and undefined it becomes the dramatic force of the image. I didn’t place in the top three but my photo “To the Other Side” was in the top tier shortlist. The photo is of a semi-truck crossing the Talmadge Bridge in Savannah, Ga.

Salt Creek Beach

Oct 1, 2011 - I just finished developing a series of limited edition signed and numbered prints of my original watercolor "Salt Creek Beach."  The beach is located just south of the Ritz Carlton, near Laguna Niguel, California. My painting focuses on the beach, surf, surrounding hills and what is called a  "marine layer" which is really just a cloudy, damp day for non-Californians. Even with the clouds, it's still a great day for a swim or an epic wave!
