Zebra Swallowtail Butterfly

The Zebra Swallowtail (Protographium marcellus) is a beautiful butterfly with its distinctive wing shape, long tail and black and white striped pattern is reminiscent of a zebra. This pattern along with its red markings and antennae provides a stunning show. This one is gathering nectar from a lavender flower in a field in Maryland.

Eastern Amberwing

Here an Eastern Amberwing walks along the edge of a water lily leaf. It was a hot summer day in July and the perfect time to find dragonflies along Carroll Creek in Frederick, MD. I have to say they are my favorite insect...it also helps that they like to chow down on gnats and mosquitos. Did you know that dragonflies can fly in any direction, including sideways and backward, and can hover in a single spot for a minute or more? This is how they can move in on unsuspecting prey from any direction and they're just plain fascinating to watch.

Blue Dasher on a Water Lily

I caught this blue dasher dragonfly resting on a Nymphaea Foxfire water lily along Frederick, MD’s “Color on the Creek.” This water garden is larger than Monet's famous garden — and it’s in full bloom during the summer.

A Halloween Pennant dragonfly resting on a dead mangrove limb. I love the reflection from its wings onto the deadwood. Reminds me of a stained glass window reflection. Did you know that dragonflies have 10 billion tiny "fingers" lining their wing's surface that tear bacteria apart?
