La Perla
is an old neighborhood in Old San Juan. It's below the northern city walls. The neighborhood was formed in the 18th century around a slaughterhouse (the original building called El Matadero still exists and for many years served as a community center). La Perla has sometimes been described as a slum and as a shantytown, because many homes have been built without proper permits.
