Great Fountain

The Great Fountain - Vigeland is the largest sculpture park by a single artist in the world. It has more than 200 sculptures in bronze, granite and cast iron created by Norwegian sculptor Gustav Vigeland. The combined work represents the cycle of human life and all its emotions. This photo is of the Great Fountain. The fountain bowl is held on the shoulders of six men and according to the artist, this symbolizes the "burden of life". There are also bronze trees entwining the figures of people which represent all stages of human life. Around the base of the fountain are bronze reliefs repeating the eternal cycle of life. The park is in the middle of Oslo, Norway and whether you like or dislike the artwork it's unlike anything else in the world.

Oseberg Viking Ship

The prow of the famous Norwegian Viking ship. The Oseberg ship, was built in AD 820 and buried in a grave mound 14 years later. It was excavated in 1904 and was re-assembled and exhibited at the Viking Ship Museum, in Bygdøy, Oslo.

Gokstad Viking Ship

The finest and best preserved Viking longship is the Gokstad. It was built about 900 AD and it was excavated almost a thousand years later from a farm along the Sandefjord south of Oslo. The ship served as a burial chamber for a local unkown Viking chieftan.

King's Guards

Grass Roofs

Traditional turf-roofed wooden house and storage shed on the outskirts of Oslo, Norway near the Holmenkollen Ski Jump. The advantages of turf roofs (or sod roofs) are many. They are very heavy, so they help to stabilize the house; they provide good insulation; and they are long-lasting. Turf roofs in Norway are a tradition and you will see them everywhere. Roofs in Scandinavia have probably been covered with birch bark and sod since the Viking and Middle Ages.

Holmenkollen Ski Jump

The Holmenkollen Ski Jump is a massive ski jump with a history stretching for over 100 years. The first Jump was off a natural hill with a take-off ramp made from snow and twigs. It's been redesigned several time since. In 2011 a competition was held to design the ski jump. The winner created the ski jump tyou see today. This photo was taken in Oct showing the jump before snow is blown in.

Myrdal Station

The Myrdal Train Station on the Bergen Line with the stunning Norwegian mountains at the edge of a mountain plateau called Hardangervidda. Here you can catch the Flåmsbana train to the mighty Kjosfossen waterfall and ending in Flåm.

Nærøyfjord

Nærøyfjord near Bakka, Norway. This fjord in western Norway is one of the narrowest in Europe. The depth varies between 12 and 500 meters. The little farm below is surrounded by towering mountains and the fjord was included on UNESCO’s World Heritage List in 2005.

First Cascade

This is the first cascade of the Lægdafossen (Lægda Falls). It's a beautiful waterfall along the Sagelvi River which flows into the Næroyfjord. It's 575 meters high. The falls are fed by several small lakes and can only be reached by boat when going through the Næroyfjord.
